Marafa Canyon , also known as the “Devil’s Kitchen,” is an extraordinary place where extreme temperatures have sculpted a canyon with changing colors, depending on the time of day. This is the largest depression in Kenya, famous for its spectacular beauty and at the same time for its disturbing morphology.
Locals call this place “Nyari”, which literally translates as “the place that shapes itself”. Marafa Canyon is made up of sandstone eroded over millennia by rain and wind, creating a canyon that offers an incredible spectacle of shades of color. Here, pinnacles, ravines, gorges, spiers and stone pillars alternate, some reaching 30 meters in height, giving life to an unparalleled spectacle.
The most magical moment is at sunset, when the golden light of the sun mixes with earthy tones, transforming the rocks into a palette of colors ranging from white to pink, orange and red – a true wonder of nature.
