The Arabuko-Sokoke National Park

The Arabuko-Sokoke National Park, located on the coast of Kenya about 110 km from Mombasa, 10 km from Malindi and 5 km from Watamu, represents an extraordinary destination for nature lovers. Covering an area of 6 km², this national park is just a small portion of the vast Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, which spans 420 km² and is the largest coastal rainforest in East Africa.

The Arabuko Sokoke Forest was declared a national park in 1980, but its conservation importance dates back to 1943 when it was included in the English Crown Forest Protectorate. This unique ecosystem presents an extraordinary opportunity to explore Kenya’s coastal forests and discover a diverse range of flora and fauna.

The park offers several modes of exploration, including hiking and off-roading, depending on visitor preferences. This is a completely different experience than a classic safari, as the forest is inhabited by over 270 species of migratory birds, some of which are rare and endemic. Among these species you can spot the Clarke’s Weaver, the Amani Sunbird and the East Coast Akalat, as well as reptiles and amphibians.

Although the park is inhabited by various mammals, including African elephants, buffalo, Syke’s monkeys and yellow baboons, they are not easily spotted due to the dense vegetation.

The landscape of the Arabuko Sokoke forest is varied and includes wooded areas, “Brachistegia” forests and mixed forests, with lush vegetation that creates a tropical atmosphere. The forest is also the natural habitat of endemic species of small and large animals, such as the Arabuko Sokoke dwarf elephant, the Arabuko Sokoke cat and the Arabuko Sokoke elephant shrew. Furthermore, many colonies of monkeys, especially baboons, and buffaloes are found within the park.

Arabuko Sokoke Forest Park is popular among birdwatchers as it is a transit point for many migratory bird species and is rich in endemic bird species such as Clark’s weaver, Amani nectarine and Sokoke pipit.
